Water & Wastewater By 2025 the amount of people around the globe living in water-stressed areas is expected to rise to 5.1 billion, and it is predicted to increase to 6.5 billion by the year 2085 (Met Office, 2006). With diminishing fresh water supplies around the world, there is a growing need for economical treatment and reuse of wastewater.Synder Filtration is committed to creating value in the Water and Wastewater industries through constant innovation and development of new technologies and services. Our goal is to lower the cost of processing Water and Wastewater in order to reduce the demand for limited fresh water supplies. ![]() Reverse Osmosis – Reverse Osmosis membrane technology is the preferred method for producing Ultrapure water for numerous applications. Synder Filtration’s Reverse Osmosis Systems offer a physical barrier to microbial contaminants and allow only water to pass through the membrane with up to 99.9% rejection of other molecules. The advanced Reverse Osmosis systems feature Touch Panel HMI Controls and include a Stainless Steel frame for corrosion resistance. All systems are designed based on a certified feed water analysis and customer requirements of RO permeate quality and capacity.
Reverse Osmosis Pretreatment ![]() Sea Water – Synder Filtration’s NFX Nanofiltration membrane is capable of providing the quality that RO systems require to operate efficiently. The NFX membrane can remove divalent ions up to 2000 mg/l of TDS. Nanofiltration is also capable of removing ions that cause hardness, such as CaCO3. Since no regenerating chemicals are used, like those in traditional water softeners, Nanofiltration is a more environmentally friendly method for removal of hardness from seawater. Surface Water / Ground Water - SpiraSep submerged filtration systems provide the ideal filtration system for surface water and other sources. SpiraSep is a patented back-flushable membrane, with the following benefits:
Synder’s NFX Nanofiltration membranes can also be implemented in the treatment of surface & ground water. The NFX membranes are capable of removing multivalent & divalent ions from the water. The NFX membrane also eliminates odors, colors and THM (Trihalomethane) precursors. Municipal Wastewater – Traditional Reverse Osmosis pretreatment methods involve the use of multiple filtration systems or dangerous chemicals to keep the RO membranes working at optimum efficiency. By implementing the SpiraSep submerged filtration system the need for harmful chemical pretreatment is eliminated. The SpiraSep system is capable of handling high turbidity spikes that can be prevalent in municipal water sources. Since the SpiraSep system can handle large spikes in turbidity, TDS, TSS & TS the system will not clog and perform with decreased efficiency like a conventional hollow fiber filtration system. The SpiraSep system provides pretreatment ensuring the RO system will run at optimum efficiency thus increasing the life of the RO membranes. Brackish Water – Brackish water can be harmful to agriculture if not properly treated. The NFX membrane by Synder is the solution to brackish water treatment. The NFX membrane is not only capable of removing multivalent & divalent ions from the water it also eliminates odors, colors and THM (Trihalomethane) precursors from brackish water. Of the 2.27 x 1016 m3 of groundwater available in the United States, over half is composed of brackish water, 1.28 x 1016 m3. Currently this water is not used but with proper treatment the use of brackish water could help to alleviate current fresh water shortages. ![]() SpiraSep submerged filtration systems provide the ideal filtration system for surface water and other sources. SpiraSep is a patented back-flushable membrane, with the following benefits:
Synder’s NF Nanofiltration membranes can also be implemented in the treatment of surface & ground water. The NFX membranes are capable of removing multivalent & divalent ions from the water. The NFX membrane also eliminates odors, colors and THM (Trihalomethane) precursors. Swimming Pool Filtration – Swimming pools are often used for various types of rehabilitations in hospitals. Patients who utilize these pools are often vulnerable to infections or have weakened immune systems. It is imperative that hospital therapy pools be free of any pathogens, bacteria, or viruses. In addition, it is also critical that the amount of chlorine used for disinfection purposes be minimal as disinfection by-products present an additional health hazard. Synder’s SpiraSep system can provide the necessary filtration and disinfection, while reducing the amount of chlorine needed and subsequent disinfection by-products associated with chlorination. Some treatments require heat sanitation at temperatures up to 80° C (176° F). SpiraSep is the only UF technology capable of tolerating heat sanitization temperatures at the required temperatures. ![]() Municipal Wastewater Reuse – SpiraSep submerged ultrafiltration technology provides a highly robust method for treating secondary clarified effluent for re-use or discharge. SpiraSep membranes are rigid, providing greater mechanical strength and UF effluent quality over Hollow Fiber systems. Process air scouring is used to continuously clean and improve the efficiency of the filters leading to a higher sustained flux rate over Hollow Fiber systems. Oily Wastewater – High concentrations of free oil and emulsified oils can foul standard spiral membranes very quickly. Tubular Ultrafiltration technology solves this problem with a very wide (1”) feed channel. The Tubular UF filters are capable of handing very high concentrations of emulsified oil and a wide range of feed water contaminants while always providing consistent permeate quality. This system is an ideal choice for the treatment of emulsified oily wastewater.
![]() Industrial Cleaner Bath – Tubular Ultrafiltration can also handle high amounts of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and oils, which is ideal for processing industrial cleaner baths. This specialized technology can often offer a pay back of 3-6 months, while providing the following operational benefits:
Landfill Leachate – Every year, millions of gallons of polluted water leach out of landfills all over the world. Landfill leachate is plagued with high turbidity, salinity, suspended solids and organic content that require a unique membrane solution. The SpiraSep system is capable of handling high variability in water chemistry, especially suspended solids (TSS) and total organic carbon (TOC). Further treatment via NFX Nanofiltration membranes or Reverse Osmosis systems can be utilized for reuse. ![]() General Pollution Control – Synder’s NFX Nanofiltration membranes can be used for COD & BOD removal along with color, colloidal silica, and particulate matter. The NFX membranes can also be utilized for nuclear coolant clean up and nitrate reduction.
